The first pay-per-view of 2023 has finished, and it was an exciting one. With good fights and flashy finishes alike, it’s safe to say that UFC 283 delivered.
Michigans own Jamahal Hill claimed UFC Gold for the first time with his victory over Glover Teixeira, Brandon Moreno put an end to the best and longest rivalry in the history of the flyweight division with his win over Deiveson Figueredo and Gilbert Burns further bolstered his case for the next title challenger at 170 with a submission win over Neil Magny.
Paul Craig Vs Johnny Walker
Two top-ranked Light Heavyweights clashed to open the main card. The bout opens with a blistering leg kick 30 seconds in. Then, about two minutes later, Craig catches a front kick from Walker, which then allows Walker to throw a piston-like right-hand that stuns Craig.
In hopes of bringing the fight to the ground, Craig attempted to drag his leg down. Walker unloaded a series of hammer fists and referee Marc Goddard stepped in to end the fight.
Official result: Johnny Walker via KO 2:16 R1
Jessica Andrade vs Lauren Murphy
It’s safe to say this bout was very one-sided. Looking at the stats (per UFC.com), Andrade landed the sixth-most significant strikes in a fight ever and the most in a WMMA fight with 231, 10 less minutes than many ahead of her on the list.
With all due respect to the beatdown that Adrade put on Murphy, I have to give respect to Murphy for not getting finished, despite the record-setting strikes landed. Murphy’s wrestling was unseen in the fight, and the Brazilian put on a striking masterclass for the home crowd.
Official result: Jessica Andrade vs Unanimous Decision (30-25, 30-26, 30-25)
Gilbert Burns vs Neil Magny
Gilbert Burns and Neil Magny clashed in the octagon next. Magny, with his win over Daniel Rodriguez, became the winningest welterweight in the history of the division. This also gave him the opportunity to choose his next opponent, and he chose Burns. The very threatening welterweight was coming off his Fight of the Year win vs Khamzat Chimaev and looking to further bolster his case for #1 contender.
The bout began with Magny using his reach advantage to stave off Burns’ attack. That didn’t stop him for long, as Burns whipped a hard body kick right below the elbow of Magny. Burns threw his jab, then immediately went for the level change and the takedown.
Burns went into half guard, but Magny dragged him back into full guard. Seeking mount position, he opted to go to side control as Magny’s lengthy legs give him issues in doing so.
After passing into half guard, Burns then pressed his full body weight onto the chest of Magny and passed through his guard, looking to submit him with an Arm Triangle.
Knowing there was little left he could do, Magny extended his arm out forward and tapped out ending the bout before it could reach round two.
Official result: Gilbert Burns by Arm Triangle R1 4:15
Deiveson Figueiredo vs Brandon Moreno
The greatest rivalry in flyweight history has ended with a historic fourth fight. With the rivalry being split at 1-1-1 with a win apiece and a draw in the first meeting, this fourth and final clash was the last one needed to conclude the rivalry.
The first two rounds seemed to have spelt doom for Figueiredo. Despite some submission attempts on the ground, the Champ did very little work in the standup compared to Moreno, which is the most important category when it comes to MMA Judging.
Toward the beginning of Rd 3, Moreno threw an odd punch in which the knuckle of Moreno’s left thumb connected with Figueiredo’s right eye. He protested, believing his eye was poked, and Figueirdo dropped his guard. Not only after Moreno brought him to the ground and referee Herb Dean continued the fight did Figueiredo continue.
The round ended and the corner for the champ gave the great “fight with one eye” advice as he got examined by the doctor. Following the doctor’s advice, Herb Dean waved off the fight, ending the craziest rivalry in the history of the division.
Official result: Brandon Moreno via TKO (Doctor Stoppage) 5:00 Rd 5
Jamahal Hill vs Glover Teixeira
This was the fight no one knew they wanted until it was thrown together minutes after the conclusion of UFC 282 has arrived. The Dana White Contender series alum Jamahal “Sweet Dreams” Hill got the blue corner, while the fan-favorite 43-year-old Glover Teixeira got the red corner on his quest to re-claim UFC gold.
To say Hill was prepared for this fight is an understatement. Hill looked as good as a fighter could be as he stuffed 15 of the 17 takedown shots Teixeira threw while also out striking Teixeira 248-108.
Glover, simply put, looked deflated. One of the main parts of his age 40+ career is his takedown capability. Hills’ lengthiness makes taking him down very difficult and if one does keep him down, they’ll have a hard time keeping him down. This was evident in the fight as Hill stuffed 15 takedown attempts from Glover.
Official result: Jamahal Hill via Unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-44)

This was very informative. I now feel more knowledgeable about the UFC 283.
