The Philadelphia Phillies, fresh off of a World Series season, are facing some very bad news with first baseman Rhys Hoskins. Hoskins, unfortunately, tore his ACL and will need surgery.

No return timeline has been set yet, but ACL tears typically keep players out for at least one entire season.

The Phillies, luckily, have several star players that should be able to keep the team pretty successful. However, Hoskins is a big loss in the core that certainly won’t go unnoticed.

Rhys Hoskins is a big loss, but the Phillies should be able to adjust to his absence

Alec Bohm, who typically plays at third base, will likely be moved to first with Edmundo Sosa pulled to third. Bohm is a huge part of the core, along with Kyle Schwarber, Brandon Marsh, Nick Castellanos and, now, Trea Turner. Talent runs deep with the Phillies, and they’ve done a great job of roster construction over the past years.

A major point of concern with Sosa, however, is that he’s yet to play an entire season over his four-season career. He thrived in Philadelphia throughout the 25 games he played there last season, slashing .315/.345/.593 for an OPS of .938, but it’s tough to predict whether or not he will be able to maintain such performance through an entire season.

While Hoskins isn’t a perfect player, he’s certainly shown a lot of improvement over the years and the Phillies were actively making him better and better. The team won’t get to utilize his development this season, which may put them at a minor setback.

Hopefully Hoskins will have a speedy recovery.
