It’s time – Ghostface is taking Manhattan.
Yesterday, the first official full trailer for Scream 6 was finally released, and it’s met the anticipation of fans; there’s already dozens of clues, easter eggs, and theories being thrown out since it was dropped. So we wanted to officially throw our hat into the prediction ring by breaking down some scenes in the trailer and what we think they’re going to mean.
GALE ON THE PHONE WITH GHOSTFACE
We’re going to be jumping around this trailer quite a bit, so buckle up. But the first thing we want to talk about is the scene part way through the trailer of Gale talking to the killer on the phone in what seems to be her apartment. It’s a big part of the trailer, and we have a few thoughts after seeing it.
First off, there’s a possibility that this is the start of Scream 6. The lighting and audio just in the trailer seem very reminiscent of how many Scream movies start out, as well as Gale’s calm attitude; if this were halfway through the movie, would she be as relaxed as she appears to be? Probably not, unless she thinks its just a prank caller, sort of like how Sidney got one in Scream 2. We also see someone behind Gale being killed, and while it might seem like a background kill, it also feels like they are trying to hide who the victim is.
Who we think the first kill of the movie is we’ll get to in a bit. But for now, there’s something else we noticed that we keep seeing in the trailer as well. What’s that?
EARLY REVEAL OF THERE BEING TWO GHOSTFACES
How is Gale going to be on the phone with Ghostface while he’s walking around her apartment and killing someone just behind her? How is the bodega owner in the beginning of the trailer going to shoot Ghostface only for him to pop up behind him? (We’ve already done the teleporting Ghostface, and these days that’s been treating more of a joke.) There’s also a quick scene after the Gale scene where Sam’s back is to the camera and she is clearly facing Ghostface, and Tara is behind her looking at something off screen. But what is it that she’s looking at? A body? A video? Or a second killer?
We’re thinking the movies going to let us know right away there’s more than one Ghostface stalking the group, instead of forcing a buildup to what we all know. After all, it’s (almost) always two.
KIRBY’S RETURN
While she’s not in a whole lot of the trailer, Kirby’s big return to the Scream movies has been waited for since the mentions of her in the last movie, and fan’s excitment has been heard all over social media. But what is Kirby going to be doing in this one? Part of us thinks she might be filling in the shoes of Sidney since she isn’t going to be joining the gang in New York, but there could be something more sinister.
What is Kirby is one of th Ghostfaces? While there may not be a lot evidence in the trailer to support this theory, admittedly, it feels like there’s a reason for the sole Scream 4 newbie survivor’s return. So the options could be that either she’s there to be killed, or maybe to kill.
END OF GALE?
Watching the trailer, you may notice that Gale doesn’t seem to be in a whole lot of it. Sure, she is there enough, and we know she is gonna make it past what we assume is the opening scene, but there’s some doubt amongst some fans on social media on if the reporter turned author final girl will be making it to Scream 7, or if she’ll be joining Dewey on the other side.
RETURN OF AN OLD KILLER?
Finally, we want to talk a little about the actual plot of the movie and what we think might be the big surprise. Like we said, we think early on they might reveal that there is more than one Ghostface. But, we also think there might be more than two.
For years, there’s been a running theory, that at one point was confirmed by Scream actor Matthew Lillard, that original killer Stu Macher was actually still alive, and had started a cult of killers from prison to attack Sidney Prescott and friends. However, the tragic Columbine shooting wound up changing the script of Scream 3, and that idea seemed to die quickly.
But now with the scene in the trailer that included different easter eggs to all the other movies, along with Gale’s comment of it being a “shrine”, a lot of people are speculating that the old cult plot line might be making its way back for Scream 6. Which would fit in with the thoughts that this Scream might be one of the more darker ones of the franchise.
We can only hope, if they are bringing in the cult line, Stu will be coming back with it. It would almost be a crime for him not to be, especially with how much Lillard has made it clear he still loves these movies; including with his cameos in Scream 2 and Scream 5.
But what do you think? Do you think Gale and the newbies are going to make it out of New York alive? Who do you think will be behind the masks this time? Let us know!
